Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the Sacrament through which bishops, priests, and deacons are consecrated to serve the People of God. Through this Sacrament, the ministry entrusted by Christ to the Apostles continues in the Church. Those ordained are called to shepherd the flock not with power, but with love—“in the power of the Spirit and according to [Jesus’] Heart,” as Pope Francis says.
Ordained ministers are placed “at the head” of the community, but not for domination; their authority must be exercised in service. Jesus himself taught: “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant” (Mt 20:26). A bishop or priest who does not serve fails in his calling.
This ministry also requires a deep and passionate love for the Church. The priest or bishop is called to love the Church “as Christ loves the Church” (Eph 5:25), dedicating his whole life to his community and caring for it as his own family.
But this calling must be constantly nurtured. Pope Francis warns that without prayer, Scripture, daily Mass, and regular Confession, the joy and meaning of priestly life fade. Support and prayer for priests and bishops are essential to their holiness and service.
Finally, the call to priesthood is not bought or earned—it is a gift from God. If you sense this call in your heart, do not ignore it. Pray for clarity and courage.
